Optically induced persistent current in carbon nanotubes

چکیده
We demonstrate theoretically that an off-resonant circularly polarized electromagnetic field can induce a persistent current in carbon nanotubes, which corresponds to electron rotation about the nanotube axis. As consequence, nanotubes acquire magnetic moment along axis, depends on their crystal structure and be detected state-of-the-art measurements. This effect related phenomena are analyzed within developed Floquet theory describing electronic properties of irradiated by field.

Persistent Currents in Carbon Nanotubes
Persistent currents driven by a static magnetic flux parallel to the carbon nanotube axis are investigated. Owing to the hexagonal symmetry of graphene the Fermi contour expected for a 2D-lattice reduces to two points. However the electron or hole doping shifts the Fermi energy upwards or downwards and as a result, the shape of the Fermi surface changes. Such a hole doping leading to the Fermi ...
متن کاملAvalanche-induced current enhancement in semiconducting carbon nanotubes.
Semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes under high electric field stress ( approximately 10 V/mum) display a remarkable current increase due to avalanche generation of free electrons and holes. Unlike other materials, the avalanche process in such 1D quantum wires involves access to the third subband and is insensitive to temperature but strongly dependent on diameter approximately exp(-1/d...
متن کاملPersistent orbital degeneracy in carbon nanotubes
The quantum-mechanical orbitals in carbon nanotube quantum dots are doubly degenerate over a large number of states. We argue that this experimental observation indicates that electrons are reflected without mode mixing at the nanotube-metal contacts. Two electrons occupying a pair of degenerate orbitals “shell” are found to form a triplet state starting from zero magnetic field. Finally, we ob...
متن کاملPersistent currents in carbon nanotubes based rings
Persistent currents in rings constructed from carbon nanotubes are investigated theoretically. After studying the contribution of finite temperature or quenched disorder on covalent rings, the complexity due to the bundle packing is addressed. The case of interacting nanotori and self-interacting coiled nanotubes are analyzed in details in relation with experiments.
متن کاملOptically modulated conduction in chromophore-functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes.
We demonstrate an optically active nanotube-hybrid material by functionalizing single-wall nanotubes with an azo-based chromophore. Upon UV illumination, the conjugated chromophore undergoes a cis-trans isomerization leading to a charge redistribution near the nanotube. This charge redistribution changes the local electrostatic environment, shifting the threshold voltage and increasing the cond...
